High School and Re-entry to School Component
This component provides services to in-school high school students or individuals interested in returning to high school, attending a GED preparation program or returning to college. Some of the services provided to these individuals are:
- Career, Academic, College and Financial Aid advising
- Curriculum Advisement
- Tutoring
- Assistance in searching for and selecting colleges and sources of financial aid;
- Assistance in Applying to Colleges and for financial aid;
- Workshops
- Free College Campus Visits
- Mentoring
- Workshops on Financial Planning and literacy for both parents and students
- College Admissions Tests Prep Classes and tracking of students once enrolled in college
Our primary target high schools for this component are:
High School of Law and Public Service
The High School for Law and Public Service, opened in 1999 in the George Washington Educational Complex, is a well-established school with stable leadership and above average attendance.
The school is popular, with 1,840 students applying for 180 spots in 2011. Many of the students are English Language Learners. At the school, students learn about the public sector, law and how to make positive changes in the community.
The school offers a variety of Advanced Placement classes, and founding principal Nicholas Politis told Insideschools.org in 2008 that teachers encourage students to retake Regents tests many times in order to score a 75 and be competitive at CUNY schools. Most students graduated with a Regents diploma in 2011.
The College Academy
Housed in the George Washington High School complex, the College Academy offer students a chance to create their own mock business as part of the Virtual Enterprise program. The school has a dress code of white or light blue shirt and navy or black pants.
Formerly called the High School for International Business and Finance, the schools name was changed in 2010. The school has above average attendance and a graduation rate that is slightly above the citywide average.
Talent Search: Middle School Component
The Middle School Initiative (MSI) Program currently operates in one junior high school, East Harlem’s IS171, grades 6 – 8. The activities are conducted in the school after school, Monday – Thursday. This program is funded partly through federal and state funding, and is comprised of at least 80 students. The students in these components are involved in the following activities:
