Mission Statement:

The mission of the Harlem Center for Education – Educational Opportunity Center is to assist adult learners who are low-income and potential first-generation college students make the transition into post-secondary education. The Educational Opportunity Center seeks to accomplish this mission by providing our participants with free TASC-prep (GED) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes, information about and application assistance with financial aid and college admissions applications, academic tutoring, career exploration, and other services. Our ultimate goal is to provide our participants with the competencies necessary to utilize post-secondary education and training as a means to escape poverty and improve their lives.

 

History:

The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) was implemented in the fall of 2002 by the Harlem Center for Education, and is funded through a U.S. Department of Education TRIO Programs Grant. Throughout its years of operation E.O.C. has been providing educational and college access services to adults who are low-income and potential first-generation college students in the East Harlem and communities throughout New York City.

All programs and services provided are FREE.

 

Accomplishments:

    • Provided educational services to over 12,000 adults since 2002
